That’s the last time I wear a short skirt to a Business meeting!

12 Oct

Hmmmmm – you can tell I’ve been out of the wonderful world of HR for a while. Yesterday I pitched up to a day long seminar on how to boost sales and profits run by Nigel Botterill of  the genius Entrepreneur’s circle   ( – def worth a look if you’ve got your own business ) wearing what I thought was a reasonably smart yet comfortable outfit. I was working the ‘professional yet relaxed look’.  Or was I………?

Well, in the afternoon session it turned out this was very far from the case! When good ol’ Nige asked what we had learnt from Richard Denny, the morning speaker, I swallowed my nerves, stuck up my hand and, as luck would have it, gave the right answer. So far, so good.  But it didn’t end there, as Nigel was in a generous mood and rewarding participation with a selection of free books.  So he gave me a good look up and down, and picked the perfect book for me. Namely something by the acclaimed business author Sydney Biddle Barrows.

Heard of her? No, nor I, and neither had anyone else in the room. So Nigel kindly explained that  Sydney had a rather unique approach to sales, learnt during the 5 years that she was running a high class escort service in New York!! For in the US Sydney is better known as the Mayflower Madam, and even spent some time in prison for her pains.

Well, that certainly got everyone’s attention, & I felt 120 pairs of eyes swivel towards me to check out the woman who Nigel thought would benefit from teachings of a washed out hooker……….  At which point I decided that I’m definitely wearing trousers to the next meeting!

Mind you, I’ve now dipped into the book – Uncensored Sales Strategies – and I think it’s going to be brilliant. And as for Sydney, well, she’s beautiful, smart, funny, writes like a dream, and knows a thing or two about what really makes people tick. What’s not to love?

Finally I’ve attached some pics from the day – managed to get one with the esteemed Mr Denny, who was brilliant, & then with Nigel. And don’t worry – the photographer’s been kind to me so you’ve been spared my knees!

If you look very closely at the book you can see the words ‘Sex sells’ – just to rub insult into injury!

Dunno what it says about ME but I had actually heard of the lay-dee in question. Anyway, if you can’t learn something from one of the most successful practitioners of the oldest form of business in the world …

I know of Richard Denny having come across his book “Selling to Win” published in 1988 – ahead of its time and still relevant today for any business.
