Quite Great? More like Blimmin’ Marvellous!

9 Feb

quite-great-logo

Today ShoesieQ brings glad tidings: her shop Modish has been chosen to be featured as part of Quite Great’s Guide for tourists and shoppers coming to Cambridge – Cambridge Unwrapped!

The lovely people at Quite Great have taken it upon themselves to give visitors to our beautiful city a few inside tips on THE best places in Cambridge for a bit of shopping or a bite to eat. Pete Bassett, the boss of Quite Great, very kindly explained that all the shops and outlets chosen are examples of must go to Cambridge retailers who truly understand both the heartbeat of the city and the way to give shoppers a great experience.

The very slight downside is that this guide is via the medium of You Tube, and if you are indeed ShoesieQ that makes it a teensey weensey bit excruciating to watch.

But she has bitten the bullet (!) and added a link so you can see for yourself. In fact it’s such a great idea here’s the link to the whole thing!

Ladies and gentlemen, we present to you The Sliced Loaf!

4 Oct

If you are, in the immortal words of Ray Davies,  a dedicated follower of fashion, you won’t fail to have noticed a slightly surprising new trend that the likes of Alexa et al have been sporting over the last few weeks, namely the “Sliced Loaf”.

Now in case you were wondering about the sanity of said fashionistas, ShoesieQ needs to point out that women are NOT rushing down to Lidl (or even Waitrose) en masse, grabbing a large Mothers Pride White Toaster Loaf and strapping two slices onto their tootsies.

What they are doing instead is popping down to their local shoe shop and walking out with a pair of backless loafers. Now obviously “backless loafers” doesn’t sound anywhere fashion-y enough for the style cognoscenti , so some wag decided to sex things up by coming up with an alternative moniker for said shoes. But sadly they coined the frankly ludicrous Sliced Loaf. And even more sadly a load of credulous fashion journalists have adopted this ridiculous name!

Which is a pity as the shoe itself can actually be rather great. Obviously not the furry version that makes it look as though, with every step, you’re massacring a small family of chipmunks. The less said about those, the better! But hey, at least the women wearing them aren’t torturing themselves with every step, which makes a pleasant change from most fashion footwear eh? And worn with trousers of just about any length they look pretty cool.

What’s more, said shoes make ShoesieQ feel remarkably smug, as her shop Modish is somewhat (unusually!) ahead of the game as it has sold backless loafers by Geox for the past few years now. And indeed has them in stock as she types in case you wanted to give them a go 🙂

Geox Nebula sneakers: So what’s the biggie?!

21 Apr

You’ll have to be blind to have missed the publicity surrounding Geox’s latest shoe launch: for the Nebula sneaker. But ShoesieQ must admit to some trepidation when she first heard about them. After all trainers are everywhere these days. Just what could Geox do that’s so special?

Well once ShoesieQ tried on some of the early samples about 6 months ago she thought she’d give them a go at her shop Modish, as they really are fabulous.

Incredibly lightweight, flexible, ultra-cushioned and supportive and fully breathable, plus, crucially, they look really neat on the feet. ShoesieQ has had shoe shops for over 8 years now and she’s never come across anything quite like it. Sure other brands can come up trumps with one of two of these benefits: but she’s never come across anything that does all of them!

Geox describe it like walking on clouds, and they’re not far wrong.

In fact she was so impressed she bought them in 6 colours! Which bearing in mind she’s only ever stock 3 colours in any one shoe max shows how good they are!

If you’re sceptical (and ShoesieQ can understand if you are, she was too!), just pop into Modish and try a pair to see for yourself! Or if you’d rather just take a look online here’s a pic of one not moving around at, followed by a link to all the colours we’re selling at Modish

Adesso shoes – that’s what!!

Adesso_Brooke_Layla_Bess

This is our first season with Adesso, and my goodness, what an eye-opener it’s been! ShoesieQ has, in all her days as a shoe siren, never come across a line like it. They’re a bit mad-looking sure, but if you’re after something lightweight, colourful and crazily comfortable, then you really can’t beat ’em.

The shoes themselves combine a memory-foam insole with a moulded footbed topped by an upper of woven elastic. And though the styles come up a bit differently to each other, ShoesieQ hasn’t yet come across a foot that won’t work with at least one of the ones she stocks at her shop Modish, which is a bit of a first!

PLUS if they get a bit grubby they can be chucked into the washing machine 5 times at a 40C wash before the elastic starts to go.

And did we mention that they cost just £30? 🙂

As you may image this is just a small selection of our range. Plus these shoes are, not surprisingly, selling like hotcakes!  So if you fancy a pair may we suggest that you, ahem, hot foot it down to Modish Cambridge or Saffron Walden a bit sharpish………..!

Breaking news……….. that is creating quite the Buzz! ‏

Shoe fans – ShoesieQ brings glad tidings! For her shoe shop Modish has now taken delivery of her entire new Fly collection 🙂   And what’s more it’s probably the most gorgeous range of theirs she’s ever seen, with a fantastic array of colours and style for pretty much every occasion.

In fact, ShoesieQ loves them so much she thinks they almost count as a work of art. Which is why she framed a few of her favourites this morning when she was having the first coffee of the day………

PLUS it would be remiss not to add that a couple of ShoesieQ’s customers have mentioned that a number of these Fly sandals are £5 to £10 cheaper at Modish than some of her competitors!  Naming no names, though one of  shops begins with a ‘J’ and ends ‘ones the Bootmaker’ whilst the other sounds like the heir to the throne combined with someone who’s had a few too many shandies saying cheers loudly and clashing glasses with everyone he/she stumble across. And btw if anyone can guess what the blimmin heck ShoesieQ’s rabbiting on about, please let her know, as she not sure if she’s being overly cryptic or just overly odd with that second clue-ette……….. 🙂

Discover Green Street launches tomorrow!

6 Jan

Cambridge Food Sandwich Sandwich136ShoesieQ was wandering round Cambridge one Sunday last month when she was struck by the fact that although the city was mobbed with shoppers, relatively few seemed to make it to Green Street, where (one of) her ladies shoe shop can be found.

Now to be honest this wasn’t the first time she’d spotted this. Nor indeed was it the first time that she asked herself why on earth more people didn’t pop down and have a mooch at Green Street. Cos it’s certainly not cos it’s lacking in great place to eat and shop.  In fact, and if she says so herself, Green Street is blessed with some of the best stores in town. For example, in the last 6 months, we’ve gained not one but two brilliant Interiors shops in Susie Watson Designs and Catesby’s. Open Air Outdoor shop is a Cambridge institution, not to mention the multi award winning Harriet Kelsall Bespoke Jewellery. We have 4 shoe shops in the Street, 2 Hairdressers and great clothes shops in the form of Oska, White Stuff and Jigsaw.

There’s even an amazing hat and cap shop in Lairds – a year ago they opened their first store outside London here.

And once you’ve finished shopping we have some great places to eat and snack in Bill’s, Harriets Café and Tearooms, Bangkok City and  the delicious Chill Frozen Yogurt.

Cambridge Food Sandwich Sandwich131But this is where the story takes a twist. Cos rather than just shake her head in bewilderment, this time ShoesieQ decided that Something Must Be Done.

So the very next day she visited all 18 businesses in the street to see if they were up for working together to promote Green Street. And, dear reader, Every Single One of Them was indeed Up For It 🙂

To cut a long story short  we decided to kick things off  by holding a day long event on January 7th called “Discover Green Street”. There’ll be things to do from breakfast to bedtime as many of the shops and restaurants will be open late.

Susie Watson comes to Cambridge!

23 Sep

Shop Interior 5Now for those of you who have visited ShoesieQ’s Cambridge shop in the last few months, well, you might be thinking that, yet again, ShoesieQ is a bit behind on her blogging. Cos it is true that this very lovely shop has already been open for a couple of months now (well, almost 4, now she thinks about it).

But dear reader, you’d be wrong! Cos it was only last Thursday that Susie Watson herself came down to throw a bit of a bash to celebrate the opening of her latest store here on lil’ ol’ Green Street.

And hey, if the Queen can have have 2 birthdays, well ShoesieQ reckons that it’s more than fair enough that Susie Watson can have 2 launch days 😉

Anyway, Susie was joined by a whole throng of people during the day and into the evening, including our MP Julian Huppert, lots of local journalists and bloggers, and yours truly (once she’d shut up shop at 5.30pm). And we all had a lovely time in her lovely shop admiring all the very many, very lovely things, accompanied by a few glasses of fizz and some yummy canapes.

Susie Watson herself!

Susie Watson herself, with Nicky Shepard (well done Nicky – great night!)

But when all things are said and done, what is probably the most impressive thing about Susie Watson Designs is the fact that all of these very lovely things are handmade by people who are paid a living wage in parts of the world where this is not normally the case.

If you want to find out more, here’s a link to the relevant page of their website:

But really the best way to find out more is to come along to the shop! And if you do, please do pop in to say hi to ShoesieQ! 🙂
